Cycle road races

There are a number of long cycling races in South Africa but the most well known is the Pick n Pay Argus Cycle Tour, which takes place in Cape Town in March. It’s the largest individually timed sporting event in the world, and the whole city virtually comes to a standstill to watch about 40,000 cyclists pedal a scenic route around the Cape Peninsula. Other big road races include the Tour d’Urban in Durban in April and the 94.7 challenge, which takes place in November in Johannesburg. A relatively new addition to the cycling calendar is the 5-day Tour d’Eden, along the Garden Route – this is a beautiful stage race, run in late September or early October, through some utterly magnificent scenery.
