Diving the chokka run

Chokka, or squid – or calamari to the more gastronomic – breed in the waters off the Eastern Cape between St Francis Bay and Port Elizabeth. Any time between late October and November, they spawn in their millions – doing weird mating dances and then laying their eggs on the sea floor. And – like any other concentration of edible organisms – they attract a whole range of predators. Seals, fish, dolphins and sharks move in to the lovely temporary larder and – of course – so do the fishing boats. The best places to dive the run are Port Elizabeth and St Francis Bay, with PE having a far more interesting infrastructure for SIT or to amuse non-divers.
