©SA TourismThe KZN coast offers tropical or sub-tropical diving. The water temperature rarely drops below 20°C, and the viz is usually in excess of 10m, sometimes much more. There can be good conditions all year but they are most dependable in winter.
Sodwana Bay, which has some of the most southerly coral reefs in the world, is the most popular diving area in South Africa, followed by the KZN South Coast, which has some beautiful coral-encrusted rocky reefs with all the usual colourful tropical fish. It's also a great shark diving destination. The KZN North Coast has some great diving, but the dive infrastructure is not nearly as well developed. The city of Durban also has some fun dives but does not measure up to Sodwana or the South Coast. In the far north of the province, Maputaland is a very sparsely populated area with very few exclusive dive resorts. There are numerous dive operators in KZN offering courses, charters and retail therapy. Diving is mostly on offshore reefs off dive boats launched from the beach.
