Diving the KZN South Coast

©Fiona McIntosh©Fiona McIntoshAlthough there are no true coral reefs, the many coral-encrusted rocky reefs make the KZN South Coast a fantastic dive destination with loads of pretty colourful tropical fish and some of the best shark diving around. All the dives on the South Coast necessitate a surf launch and a relatively long boat ride, and most are drift dives. Some of the more popular sites here include the enormous Aliwal Shoal, near Umkomaas. Aliwal has something for everyone, ranging from shallow dives suitable for beginners to deeper dives and shark experiences. Further South, Landers Reef is renowned for its particularly impressive relief, as well as all the usual expected pretty tropical fish. Even further south, the iconic Protea Banks is a must-dive spot for experienced divers. At 8km out to sea, in the teeth of the Mozambique Current and with the top of the reef at 36m, this is defintely not suitable for beginners. And that's before you even consider the enormous population of sharks. White sharks, Zambezis, tiger sharks, hammerheads and ragged tooth sharks are regularly seen at different times of the year.
