Gourmets come to live here forever when they die (if they’ve been good) because this is food and wine heaven. The terroir varies to such an extent that almost all South Africa’s varieties are produced here – all at the top end of the range. This is a region of precision wine-making where the influence of the early French winemakers is most noticeable, and prices reflect it.
The valley, the village and the houses are very pretty. Although it is a great destination for a day trip from Cape Town, there is plenty of accommodation on offer, from simple farm stays to de luxe guesthouses – and restaurants, cafes and bistros at every turn.
