Polo

© SA Tourism© SA TourismPolo is pretty big in South Africa with active clubs in Cape Town, Johannesburg and in some of the farming areas but the epicentre of the sport is at Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route. With some of the most prestigious private polo estates, numerous small competitions throughout the year and one big international event in summer, this lovely coastal town is rapidly becoming a feature on the international polo calendar. The fact that it has great beaches, fabulous golf courses, wonderful hotels and guest houses, mind-blowing scenery, whales and dolphins and loads of great activities probably also helps.

If you want to improve your game – or even if you don’t know one end of a horse from another – you could do a long or short polo clinic in South Africa. While nothing to do with polo is cheap, South Africa is more affordable than most other polo-playing parts of the world, and many northern hemisphere players spend a month or so here in the summer working on their game.
