© Jennifer Stern© Jennifer SternNestled between rolling, citrus-covered hills and tea estates, this lovely, sub-tropical town offers so much. Tzaneen is close to the game areas of Limpopo, the northern end of the Drakensberg, and the mysterious, virtually unexplored Blouberg. If you're interested in local culture, botany or mythology you would enjoy a visit to the nearby Modjaji’s Forest. This spectacular stand of ancient plants has been preserved over the last 400 years by the personal intervention of Modjaji – the queen of the Lobedu people. Obviously, it hasn’t been the same queen all along. Legend says she is immortal and, until recently, no commoners have laid eyes on her. The most recent queen has been far more outgoing and perhaps the myth has lost some of its magic. Her powers rest on her ability to make rain, and have always been uncontested.
