© Jennifer Stern© Jennifer SternUlundi itself is a small, unprepossessing town but it is in the heart of Zululand, near the Emakhosini – the Valley of the Kings – which is the traditional burial ground of Zulu kings. Close by is Ondini – the historical capital of King Cetshwayo, the last of the great Zulu kings. Also not far is mGungundlovu, the headquarters of the Zulu king, Dingaan, Shaka’s successor. Also there are the graves of the voortrekkers, Piet Retief and his followers, who were killed while visiting Dingaan. There are museums and much more – truly a treasure-trove of Zulu history and culture. The wonderful Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park, with its numerous rhino and other animals, is close by.

Ulundi has a small airport with scheduled flights to Durban via Pietermaritzburg. Ulundi is about 260km north of Durban
